The saxophone was invented by the Belgian instrument maker Adolphe Sax , who patented it in 1846 in Paris. His goal was clear: build an instrument with "the agility of a woodwind and the volume of a brass".
Although the body is made of brass, it makes its sound the same way a clarinet does — a single reed vibrating — so it is classified as a woodwind. The key difference is the shape of the tube: the saxophone is conical, so it has the full harmonic series, overblows at the octave, and its fingerings are therefore simpler than the clarinet's (twelve notes per cycle, vs against the clarinet's nineteen). It is also why so many clarinettists pick up the sax quickly.
