2023/05/07 Band Workshop for Dancers & Live Band Social

"The band is playing too fast or too slow—how do I communicate with them?" "How can I pinpoint the nuances in Swing and Blues phrasing?" To address these common questions, we invited musicians from the Friday Quintet and dance instructor Chris Sun to co-host this workshop. We explored musical structures and the art of listening, helping dancers dive deep into the heart of the music, followed by a live band social session for real-time practice.

Following a full day of orchestra rehearsals, I hosted a special lecture to share my "slash career" philosophy. Beyond discussing how to balance a professional career with a passion for travel and performance, I provided a deep dive into jazz improvisation—demonstrating how to build creative solos from simple melodies and rhythms, leaving the students with valuable insights and inspiration.
