Musicality for Dancers — From "1 beat" to "the whole song", 8 mini-levels to play, listen, and step.
Both basic steps use the same two ingredients: Rock step (2 quick steps) and Triple step (3 steps in 2 beats, the extra step is hidden on the "and"), just arranged differently.
Musically "1 bar" = 4 beats. "8-Count" = 2 consecutive bars (8 beats). Play: beats, numbers, and steps will go together.
6-Count has only 6 beats = 1.5 bars, making it unaligned with bar lines, shifting back 2 beats each time. Play to see how "1" takes turns aligning.
Foot taps on beats 1, 2, 3, 4 (gold circles), hand claps on the offbeats (cyan dots). Switch Straight/Swing to see how the dots move — that’s the source of the "swing feel". You can also turn on "🎵 Two Tigers" to hear real melodies.
Switch accents between beats 1 & 3 (march feel) or 2 & 4 (Backbeat, common in rock/funk/soul) to feel the bounce. You can also turn on "🎵 Two Tigers" to hear the same melody with different accents.
A common ear-training method for jazz musicians: the system claps a phrase (Call), and you clap back the same rhythm immediately (Response). Get two perfect rounds to clear!
Call (System’s rhythm):
Response (Your turn, tap the same rhythm):
Select a form and see how it’s divided into sets of 8-Counts or 6-Counts; playback will light up accordingly.
Many old songs and Jazz Standards follow this shape: A A B A, 32 bars total, 8 bars per section.
Theme/Chorus feel, appears 3 times (1st, 2nd, 4th sections). Sounds familiar every time, the "home" of the song.
Appears only once, in the 3rd section. Harmony and melody change, the most obvious "departure and return" turning point.
Select a form and perfectly fill it with "basic steps" — the most fundamental arithmetic in choreography.
Click each question for answers — these are the most commonly asked in classes.
For live class interaction: Teacher presses "Draw Question", after the music finishes the whole class shouts the answer.

Swing rhythm is built by layering multiple instruments. You can mute/unmute each instrument to listen individually or all together.
🎯 Unit Goal: Experience the difference between "stepping on the accent" and "absorbing the pulse with the whole body".
